tagging and group commands
« on: January 07, 2011, 12:42:05 PM »
Hi,

just a thought. It would be great to expand WUI with

1) more convenient tagging - it would be great to be able to assign a tag to any virt/physical machine in the list
2) group commands - executing a certain common task on all the machines in a group.

cheers,
Ilja

1) freeform user based tagging has been planned from the start - on RPC side the needed structure is actually there - just not yet implemented in WUI side
2) group commands are currently available from func cli shell in OMS - implementing it in WUI needs more detailed discussion - what to implement and how. What do you propose- could you please describe some example use cases in more detail?

More about tagging feature design (not all implemented yet):

We have been thinking to implement 3-level tagging -

1-level (mostly implemented in OMS alpha1): Predefined host type tags (OpenNode, OpenVZ VM, KVM VM, Physical host) - one at the time and always required - we are loading basic management forms based on that tag in WUI

2-level (not implemented): Predefined service name tags (multiple per host - not required) - these tags specify and add additional service management forms by service keyword (which the VM template might set for example) - services like Apache, MySQL, OpenVPN, etc

3-level (not implemented): Freeform tags (global user editable list, multiple per host - not required) - for custom grouping and filtering the host lists
